Behind the Mic: K. Ying (FEBC Thailand)

You’ll find her as much outside the studio as she’s inside, meeting and speaking to people at listeners’ rallies and being actively involved in her community. K. Ying is a program broadcaster for several programs and a full-time staff member of FEBC Thailand. Her four programs “Calling Women”, “Hope and Encouragement”, “Daily Light” and “The Law for Life” provide daily encouragement for her listeners.

“I was Buddhist and I hated Christians. I didn’t know anything about God and Jesus. I only knew that I’m Thai and Buddhism is for Thai people, but how I came to this new life in Christ is quite amazing…

I have had a problem with my leg since I was about 2 years old. I was infected by polio. As I grew up I constantly felt very annoyed with myself when I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do. It left me feeling that life in this world is a very miserable thing. I was constantly in debt to Buddha and the universe, because, according to the teachings of Buddhism, we need to pay for any sins we have done. Bad things happen to us because of the sins we have committed.

I was about 8 years old when my aunt took me to a fortune teller to ask for the reason of my disability. That man looked at my palm and then closed his eyes for a while and thereafter told my aunt that I am disabled because of my sins. He said that there is nothing I could do about it and that I will reincarnate to live four more lives as a disabled person. Those words stuck in my mind until I was grown up. I asked myself why I lived, and believed that there was no guarantee for a better next life. Although I kept on doing good things and trying to live a better life, nobody could guarantee a good life for me.

I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to study in England. There I met an English speaking friend who gave me the book of John. At first, I didn’t want to read it, but my friend told me to read it like any other good book when I take a break from my studies; suggesting only 10 minutes a day. Because we were good friends, I started reading it bit by bit, until I found it holds the key to forgiveness of sin. It also taught me that there is no such thing as a next life, but rather the eternal life – the life where I don’t have to worry about paying back for any kind of sin! Needless to say, I read the whole of John’s Gospel. I knew that this was the answer I had been longing for.

One night in February 1991, I knelt down next to my bed and prayed to God for the first time. I have been a Christian ever since, working and living for the one true God. I resigned from my position as an economist with the Thai Government to serve the Lord. In His own amazing way, He brought me into radio programming and follow-up work with FEBC which I have been doing for the past 13 years.”
